Oklahoma Report: Sixteen Union Pacific cars derailed in rural Pittsburg County

Law enforcement officials and railroad personnel are on the site of a 16-car train derailment in Pittsburg County near Kiowa that occurred Sunday morning just after 6:30 a.m.

Authorities said no injuries were reported in the Union Pacific wreck, which say the 16-cars and a rear-facing locomotive jumped the track in a rural area north of Kiowa, approximately 115 miles southwest of Fort Smith.

According to a news release by the Pittsburg County Emergency Management agency, no hazardous materials were involved in the wreck and because of the rural setting there was no danger to the public because of the incident. One rural road was blocked at a crossing preventing a few residents from leaving their property at this time, according to officials.

Emergency management officials say crews are working to repair damage and return the cars to the rails.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation by the railroad and members of the Deprtment of Transportation.
