Lions move to 6-3 on the year with double-header sweep of Tarleton State

UAFS won its second home baseball series of the young season on Sunday afternoon as the Lions swept a doubleheader in the four-game series finale against the Tarleton State Texans at Crowder Field. The Lions (7-3) held off a late rally by the Texans (2-8) to win the opening game 5-4 and dominated the final game 14-3 to secure the 3-1 series win. UAFS split its series-opening doubleheader against Tarleton State on Saturday, winning 6-0 in the opener and losing 6-0 in the second game. UAFS led 5-0 in the Sunday's opener before Tarleton State rallied with four runs – three charged to Lions starter Christian Goshen and one charged to reliever Korbin Polly – in the top of the seventh inning. The Texans' rally ended when right fielder Jordan Parker doubled off Polly but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple to end the game. Goshen (1-0) earned the win, allowing three earned runs on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts over six-plus innings. Polly, who inherited a bases-loaded, no-outs jam, allowed one earned run on two hits with one strikeout to earn his second save of the season. Texans left fielder Tyler Parker was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, and third baseman Tyler Fowler was 2 for 3. UAFS collected a combined eight hits off three Tarleton State pitchers. Texans starter Chris Reed (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs on three hits with two walks in a brief one-inning effort, leaving without recording an out in the second inning. Lions shortstop Logan Easley was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, first baseman Kyle Love was 2 for 4 with one RBI, right fielder Logan Allen was 1 for 3 with one RBI, center fielder Travis Young was 1 for 3 with one RBI and second baseman Brandan Warner was 1 for 3 with a double. UAFS, which started five freshmen in the lineup in the second game for the first time in recent history, peppered three of the four Tarleton State starters with 10 hits, including two for extra bases, in dominating the finale. Texans starter Zach Svensson (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on two hits with three walks in a brief one-third inning outing. Warner was 2 for 3 with four RBIs, designated hitter Brady Wilcox was 2 for 3 with a double and four RBIs, Love was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, catcher Dylan Hurt was 1 for 4 with one RBI, Young was 1 for 3 with one RBI, left fielder Parker Gavazzi was 1 for 3 and right fielder Logan Allen was 1 for 4. Lions starter Andrew McGlynn, one of the five freshmen, allowed two earned runs on one hit with two walks and four strikeouts over five innings. Reliever Tyler Lindley allowed one run on three hits with one walk and one strikeout over two innings. Jordan Parker was 1 for 3 with two RBIs, and left fielder Zach Mesa was 1 for 1 with a double and one RBI.
