Different trial, same verdict for Benton County man who sodomized his six-year-old son
A twice-convicted child murderer in Benton County will learn if he is getting a death sentence for the second time when jury deliberations start on the sentencing phase of his trial Thursday.
In 2016 Mauricio Torres was found guilty of capital murder and given a death sentence in the murder of his six-year-old son, Isaiah. A medical examiner testified at that proceeding that that the child died from complications of a bacterial infection he developed during a family vacation to Missouri during which he sodomized by his father.
Cathy Torres, the child's mother, pleaded guilty to capital murder and battery in March 2017 and was sentenced to serve life in prison without parole.
This time around, Mauricio Torres was found guilty of capital murder and first-degree battery in what was his second trial after the Arkansas Supreme Court Arkansas State Supreme Court overturned his 2016 conviction and commanded a new trial.
