Fire at Fort Smith apartment complex sends one to area hospital

A fire broke out at the G. Edward West Apartment Complex at 4118 North 50th Street behind Kay Rogers Park in Fort Smith.

Fort Smith fire department chief David Edwards said that two apartments were gutted in the blaze and that one unidentified adult male was taken to a local hospital by EMS.

"He was already out of the apartment and had been transported by the time we got to the scene," said Edwards when asked to identify the victim.

The manager of the complex said that the man was not a tenant of the complex and also did not have any information on his identity.

Chief Edwards indicated that the situation could have been much worse and heaped praise on the firefighters that battled the blaze.

Standing among a cleary exhausted group of fireman, Edwards said " The dedicated people you see sitting right here trying to catch their breath did an amazing job. With just the structure damage and very few injuries, this turned out to be a good piece of work by these folks."

This is a developing story.
