On Thursday, October 4th, 1984, two young boys walked away from a boys' group home in the 1300 block of 13th Street in Ashland, Kentucky. Some sources list them as definitely running away, while others say "are thought to have run away."
Since that fateful day 35 1/2 year ago, no one has seen 12-year-old Chipley Charles Sanders or 14-year-old James Eric Bess.
It's as if they vanished into thin air.
Chipley Sanders is a Caucasian male with brown hair & hazel brown eyes. He was five foot five and weighed 150 pounds in 1984. Chipley had an oblong birthmark on his back over the left shoulder, lighter than his normal skin.
He was placed in the group home in 1983. There is no mention of what Chipley was wearing when he ran way. Chipley is listed as missing from Ashland and was last seen in Radcliff, Hardin County.
James Bess is an African American male with grey/blue eyes & brown hair. James was five foot six & weighed 110 pounds at the time of his disappearance.
He has a scar on his right arm just above the hand, a scar on the right side of his waist & a scar above his right elbow. He was last seen wearing a blue denim jacket, a sport shirt, blue jeans & gray sneakers. James was last seen in Ashland in Boyd County
The two towns are 3 hours and 27 minutes / 225 miles apart by car, compounding the mystery of how two boys who disappeared together wound up being seen so far away from each other.
Both boys were classified as "may be in need of assistance" and "endangered missing" back in 986, and their case is being investigated by the Ashland Police Department.
