On February 2, 1993, a dog carried a human skull into its owners' yard at 2013 Greenwood Road in Chattanooga, Tennessee. . Approximately five acres of woods surround the house where the dog showed up with the skull.
Chattanooga Police investigators and anthropologists from the Hamilton County Medical Examiner's office searched the area the next day, February 3, 1993, and again on February 11, 1993, without finding any other bones. A third search, on March 6, 1993, uncovered skeletal remains scattered throughout the woods.
The Medical Examiner studied the skull and concluded it was that of an adult black female. A subsequent search of local missing persons files resulted in three cases that could be a match.
Using dental records, the medical examiner concluded the remains were that of Carolyn Ann Knox.
Knox was reported missing nearly two years earlier, having last been seen alive on August 17, 1991. At the time of her disappearance, Carolyn Ann Knox was four months pregnant.
She also left behind four small children.
