Pikeville is a small, usually quiet, town of just over 7000 people that serves as the county seat of Pike County, Kentucky. Being located in the heart of Appalachia, Pikeville is also considered "city" to those who live in the mostly rural hills of the Bluegrass State.
When Crystal Gayle "Red" Hill, who had struggled with drug addiction and spent a year in jail on drug-related charges, disappeared without a trace on March 3, 2009 she had already given custody of two of her three children to her grandmother, having deemed herself an unfit mother.
She was staying with her sister in an apartment located at 108 Kentucky Avenue in Pikeville in what was said to be an effort to "get her life in order". She was home alone at that apartment on Kentucky Avenue, talking to a friend on the phone and told the party on the other end of the call "someone was coming in the back door".
The line went dead. And no one has seen or heard from Hall since that day.
Shortly after her disappearance, authorities said that there had been several reported sightings of Hall in the area, but none of them were ever confirmed. There is no evidence that she purchased a bus or plane ticket anywhere. She did not own a vehicle, and all her belongings, including her purse and coat, were found in the apartment the next day when her friends came to check on her.
Small town gossip has linked Crystal's disappearance from everything to sex trafficking to the theory that she owed someone, possibly a drug dealer, money.
Crystal Gayle Hall was 5’3″ – 5’4″ and weighed 100-120 pounds at the time of her disappearance. Here eyes were brown and her hair was red. hence the nickname "Red"
Her maiden name was Branham.
